In the mountains of Huehuetenango, one of Guatemala’s three non-volcanic regions, coffee thrives thanks to a unique microclimate created by the mix of warm air from Mexico and cool air from the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, It was in this setting that Asobagri (Asociacion Barillense de Agricultores) was founded by small-scale farmers who made their first export in 1999. Since then, it has established itself as one of the country’s most recognized cooperatives, exporting certified organic and fair-trade coffees to international markets. Today, Asobagri brings together hundreds of families from 87 communities in Hueguetenango and Quiché, many of which are led by women and young people. Their plots, located at altitudes ranging from 1,150 to 1,650 meters, thrive in fertile clay-loam soils and under diverse shade. Asobagri’s coffees stand out for their bright, complex, and fruity profiles, as well as for their social impact, offering alternatives to poverty and migration, and demonstrating that coffee can be a driver of development and conservation.
